Why I stopped Waiting

Around the year 2012 I came across a spoken word poem by a lady called Jannette…ikz of the P4CM movement. The poem is titled “I will wait for you”. I believe most of you are familiar with this brilliant piece of work (and just like me perhaps you related to the poem!) Like so many ladies (and some men lol) who heard this poem, I started my journey of waiting for ‘him’. In this waiting process I have been a part of many conversations or over heard many ladies discussing this great piece of art. However, in our focus on waiting we have forgotten who jannette said we are waiting for.

Oh how easy it is for us to be distracted- waiting on the sun to give us a reflection of him when we have the Son Himself. God has given us himself: the Holy triune God who is able to satisfy all our desires and yet leave us craving for more of him. And yet we are so easily distracted from seeing him because we are waiting for him to give us a guy. Yet some even waiting for a guy that will lead them closer to Christ when He is already there.

Now don’t get me wrong, a desire for a marriage partner is actually a good thing, but it becomes a sinful thing if we allow that desire to get in the way of us seeking God first.

So here I am presenting my new perspective. This lady is no longer waiting for that Christ loving guy to sweep off her feet nor is she waiting on God to give me a man. I am rather focusing on the only one worth waiting for, the greatest man we can ever know: Jesus Christ. It is sin to desire something more than we desire God himself, He has given us ALL that we need in himself. You will not be complete once you have a boyfriend or once you are married, you are complete now, in HIM.

Our greatest treasure is Christ. In Christ our desires are moulded and met by Him. I pray that our hearts will truly hunger to know him for who he is. If you are single there is nothing better you could be doing with your time as a single woman or man than to get to know God and pursuing His Holiness.

My dear friends, I encourage you today to examine yourself as you wait and pray for God to give you a Godly man. Are you satisfied in God alone? Are you pursuing growth in His inexhaustible knowledge?

I pray that we will be able to say with Jannette:

“But to my Father,
my Father who has known me before I was birthed into this earth,
only if You should see fit.
I desire Your will above mine.
So even if you call me to a life of singleness,
my heart is content with You—the One who was sent.
You are the greatest love story ever told,
the greatest love ever known.
You are forever my judge and I’m forever Your witness,
and I pray that I’m always found on a mission about my Father’s business.
I will always be Yours,
and I will always wait for You, Lord.
More than the watchmen wait for the morning,
more than the watchmen wait for the morning, I will wait.
