What do your spending habits tell about your heart?

Everybody loves to shop, it doesn’t have to be clothes, but we all have that one thing we love to spend money on. Most of my money goes towards food (One time for Foodies ✌🏾️), Internet and books. Like most people out there, managing finances doesn’t come naturally to me, when I started earning my own money (because grown up things 😭) I started this journey of tracking my spending habits.

What I noticed is that, I could tell what I’m really passionate about, or what means most to me by how I spend my money. This made me question and reevaluate my life, why I spend money the way I do and if there are something that is ungodly about my spending.

What do your spending habits reflect on where you store your treasures? Click To Tweet

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21

Does your spending reflect the heart of someone who is storing up treasures in heaving or making themselves comfortable on earth?

Now don’t get me wrong, saving money is not bad neither are investments. But what about the money we spend on a regular basis, does it reflect the heart and mission of God or does it scream self-gratification.
We must always remember that the ultimate end/function of money in our lives is for God to be glorified through it.

    • Is how spend my money glorifying God?
    • If I buy clothes, are these clothes that glorify God?
    • In the material possessions I acquire, is God glorified through them?
    • In what ways do I need to repent of sinful spending habits that reflect a sinful heart?
    • How can I spend or manage my money better so that God is glorified and the kingdom of God is advanced?

“I am wired by nature to love the same toys that the world loves. I start to fit in. I start to love what others love. I start to call earth “home.” Before you know it, I am calling luxuries “needs” and using my money just the way unbelievers do. I begin to forget the war. I don’t think much about people perishing. Missions and unreached people drop out of my mind. I stop dreaming about the triumphs of grace. I sink into a secular mindset that looks first to what man can do, not what God can do. It is a terrible sickness. And I thank God for those who have forced me again and again toward a wartime mindset.”- John Piper, Don’t waste your life.
